be settled in advance but I may say that, in such a case I regarò seniority as a matter of comparatively minor importance.

A. As remards the salary paid to Mr.Grey I have to refer you to the correspondence noted in the margin. The position of all the officers in the Survey Depart- ment was then considered and Mr.Grey was given his

present salary in consideration of the length of his

service.

5. I observe that in his minute of the 27th of

April, Mr.Chathum states that the amount involved is

only £60. This statement appears to be based on a misapprehension. If Mr.Darby resigns his appointment, the officer selected to replace him will begin on the minimum of his scale viz. £330 and will not reach the

maximum salary until after 9 years' service. The amount involved is therefore the differeme between £330 und

$420 for 3 years, the difference between £360 and $420

for 5 years, and the difference between £390 and $420

for three years, 1.0. & cotal of £640, less about $70

for the new officer's passage to the Colony.

6. I have therefore to request that Mr.Ty my be informed that I regret that I cannot com ent to his drawing the maximum salery of his appointment until tha proper time, i.e. July 1912. I gather however that whilst the Principal Land Surveyor is on half pay leave, Mr.farby draw more than any other officer in

the Survey Department, viz :-
